Lexington Kentucky

Are you looking for something to do in Lexington, Kentucky? Whether you are visiting for a short time or a life-long resident, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of exciting things to explore in Kentucky’s largest city.

1) Drive Through Horse Country

If there is one thing that Kentucky is known for, it is horse racing (or bourbon – but we’ll get there in a minute). Lexington has become an epicenter of the equine industry. Beautiful horse farms with picket fences surround the city and the Kentucky Horse Park offers shows and events from April through October. No matter where you are in Lexington, you will see how the horse industry has shaped the city’s development. You can find more information at the Kentucky Horse Park website.

2) Visit The Bourbon Trail

Lexington is just a short trip to the famous Bourbon Trail. Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey, and Four Roses distilleries are within a short drive from downtown Lexington. These distilleries offer tours and tastings and you can check their websites for more information. Don’t have time for the short trip out of town? Lexington also offers local distilleries like Town Branch and Bluegrass Distilleries as well. You can check out of list of nearby distilleries here.

3) Take in a Race at Keeneland

Did we mention that Lexington is famous for horse racing? Many folks (outside of Kentucky) are familiar with the Kentucky Derby which takes place at Churchill Downs in nearby Louisville, but one of the brightest gems in the state is located Lexington. Keeneland Race Track plays home to two racing meets, the Spring meet in April and the Fall meet in October. If you’re in town during one of these times, this is simply a must-see event. Keeneland boasts a beautiful rolling landscape with picket fences and horse stables scattered throughout. You can find race information on the track’s website here.

4) Take in a University of Kentucky Basketball Game

So we’ve already covered horse racing and bourbon, so the Kentucky “trifecta” wouldn’t be complete without including Kentucky basketball! The University of Kentucky is a hallmark of the city of Lexington and its perennial powerhouse basketball team attracts thousands of visitors every winter. Home court for them is the historic Rupp Arena located inside the Lexington Center in central downtown. Not visiting during the winter? No problem! The University also boasts a competitive football and baseball team as well as a nationally-acclaimed Rifle team.
