2020 Chrysler Pacifica vs 2020 Honda Odyssey
If you’ve been in the market for a new minivan, you know that the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey top almost any list of best minivans on the market today. While many major automakers have dropped out of the minivan segment altogether, Chrysler and Honda continue to innovate and bring great family-friendly vehicles to market. Every minivan owner (or informed buyer) knows that minivans continue to offer a safe, affordable and comfortable ride for the entire family. But which minivan should you buy? In this article, we will compare the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica vs the 2020 Honda Odyssey so that you can determine which vehicle is the best fit for you and your family.
When comparing the price of the Chrysler Pacifica to the Honda Odyssey, it’s important to compare similar vehicles with similar features. The base model of the Odyssey, the LX, starts at an MSRP of $30,690 compared to $33,495 on the Pacifica Touring base model. This may make the Odyssey seem like the better deal, however the Pacifica base model comes standard with premium features like a 7” Touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto and Chrysler’s Stow ‘N Go seating. Honda doesn’t offer a touchscreen on the Odyssey until the EX trim level and the Odyssey doesn’t have a stow feature for its seats. For the purposes of this article, we will compare the top of the line models: Chrysler Pacifica Limited versus the Honda Odyssey Elite. The Limited trim on the Pacifica starts at $44,445, a meaningful $2,875 discount to the Elite trim on the Odyssey which starts at $47,320.
The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Limited comes with a 3.6L V6 24V VVT Engine with Engine Start/Stop. This engine gives the Pacifica 287 maximum horsepower and ‘Best-In-Class’ towing capacity of 3,600 lbs, when properly equipped. Similarly, the Honda Odyssey Elite comes with a 3.5L V6 engine which puts out a slightly lower max horsepower of 280 and can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Both the Pacifica and Odyssey offer drivers an impressive 28 mpg on the highway. Chrysler, however, offers the only hybrid minivan on the market. The Pacifica Hybrid offers drivers an impressive 82 mpg equivalent and a maximum driving range of 520 miles!
All automakers know that available technology is one of the most important features to car buyers today, and the minivan segment is no different. Chrysler has been leading the technology advancement in the minivan segment for years, however recent redesigns have brought competitors like Honda right into the mix. Both the Pacifica and Odyssey come with a large LCD Touchscreen, Assisted Backup Camera, Navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Both vehicles also come with plenty of USB-charging ports so everyone’s devices can stay fully charged for the road ahead.
Where the Pacifica stands out is the entertainment system. The Chrysler Pacifica offers passengers a premium 20-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound group compared to only 11 speakers on the Honda Odyssey. Any parent knows the importance of a rear entertainment system to keep the family entertained on long road trips. The Honda Odyssey comes available with a ceiling mounted 10.2” high-resolution screen. The Pacifica holds the edge here as the Uconnect Theater comes available with two 10” high-resolution screens complete with a Blu-Ray player, games, apps and more.
When driving around with your most precious cargo, your family, safety is the utmost priority for any vehicle owner. Lucky for you, both the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey are perennial winners of the IIHS Top Safety Pick in the minivan segment. In 2019, the Pacifica and Odyssey were the only minivans to claim the award. Both minivans also received the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) 5-Star safety designation. The Honda Odyssey comes with Honda Sensing features like Collision Mitigation Breaking System (CMBS), Road Departure Mitigation System (RDMS), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The Chrysler Pacifica also comes with similar safety features including Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. All said, both the Pacifica and the Odyssey are the safest minivans on the road today.
We know that your family isn’t the only cargo you’ll be traveling with. Both the Pacifica and Odyssey come with available convenience features like Power Sliding Doors, Heated/Ventilated Leather Front Seats, and Hands-Free Power Tailgate. Both vehicles even come with a built-in vacuum to keep your minivan clean no matter where you are.
That may be where the similarities end. With years of innovation under its belt, FCA/Chrysler continue to offer best-in-class convenience features for minivan owners. For example, the 2020 Pacifica comes standard with Stow ‘N Go seating which allows drivers to stow all seats plush to the floor. When not stowed, these floor bins offer additional cargo space for anything you need to keep safe. Conversely, the Odyssey offers Magic Sliding 2nd Row Seats. This feature falls short as the seats must be removed from the vehicle entirely in order to achieve maximum cargo space anywhere near the Pacifica. The Pacifica also comes with Hands-Free Sliding Doors and a Tri-Pane Panoramic Sunroof both of which are unavailable on the Odyssey.
In summary, the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica and 2020 Honda Odyssey are both great family-friendly minivans. They both offer similar powertrains, safety features, as well as the latest technology. However, with the convenience of Chrysler’s Stow ‘N Go seating, premium comfort/entertainment options and a price tag of $2,875 less than the Odyssey, the Pacifica takes the edge in this comparison. All considered, it’s no wonder why the Chrysler Pacifica has won the Cars.com ‘Family Car of the Year’ award for two straight years.
