Available Engines on 2019 Dodge Challenger

The Dodge Challenger was first introduced by the Chrysler Corporation in 1970 model year and was positioned to compete against the Pontiac Firebird (GM) and Mercury Cougar (Ford). The first generation Dodge Challenger was designed to be the most potent pony car of its time. The original Challenger was available in a wide array of trim levels and virtually every engine in Chrysler’s inventory at the time. Fast forward to 2019 and, while its original competitors cease to exist,  the Dodge Challenger continues to lead the charge as one of the most powerful sports cars on the road today. The 2019 Dodge Challenger, currently in its third generation, remains true to its origin as it comes available in 5 different engine types. This, along with the various trim levels, make it the perfect muscle car for any “gear head,” regardless of budget. In this article we will explain the various engines that are available on the 2019 Dodge Challenger.

5 Available Engines on 2019 Dodge Challenger

3.6-Liter V6 24-Valve VVT Engine

The first engine we’ll discuss is the 3.6-Liter V6 24-Valve VVT Engine. This engine is the “base” engine for the Challenger and comes standard on the SXT and GT trim levels. While 3.6L V6 is the least powerful of all the Challenger engines, it packs a respectable 305 max horsepower and 268 lb/ft of torque. This engine type and trim level comes standard with an 8 speed automatic transmission and, at 30 mpg on the highway, this engine configuration is great for getting around town. The SXT and GT are also the only trims available in both Rear-Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive.

5.7-Liter V8 HEMI® VVT Engine

The next engine on the list goes by a household name “Hemi.” While a successful advertising campaign familiarized most with the name, gear heads have long known the term to be synonymous with “power.” The 5.7-Liter V8 HEMI® VVT Engine comes standard on the Dodge Challenger R/T (Road/Track) trim level. The 5.7L V8 packs a bigger punch with 375 max hp and 410 lb/ft of torque. The R/T trim level comes standard with a 6-Speed Manual TREMEC transmission but has the option to be upgraded to the TorqueFlite 8-Speed Automatic Transmission.

392 V8 SRT® HEMI® Engine

The third engine option we’ll discuss is also a HEMI but comes with another abbreviation that makes a big difference – SRT. SRT, or Street & Racing Technology, is FCA’s high-performance automobile group. This upgraded technology is really where the Dodge Challenger distinguishes itself from its competitors, the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. Packed with 485 horsepower and 475 lb/ft of torque, this performance engine can accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds. This engine comes standard on the Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack and Scat Pack Widebody trim levels.

6.2L Supercharged HEMI® V8 SRT® Engine

The fourth available engine on the 2019 Dodge Challenger is a 6.2L Supercharged HEMI® V8 SRT® Engine. While the previous engines we’ve discussed are incrementally more powerful as you step up in trim level, this Supercharged HEMI simply redefines the meaning of horsepower. At 717 horsepower and 650 lb/ft of torque, this SRT Hellcat engine is not for the faint of heart. The 6.2L Supercharged HEMI is available on the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and SRT Hellcat Widebody trims.

6.2L V8 Supercharged HO Engine

Last and certainly not least is the 6.2L V8 Supercharged HO Engine. If not for this engine, the previously mentioned Supercharged HEMI would be one of the most powerful engines ever built. Lucky for us, Dodge continues to research and develop how to put the most powerful engine possible into its cars. Introducing the 6.2L V8 Supercharged High Output Engine packing a whopping 797 horsepower and 707 lb/ft of torque. This engine, available only on the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye and SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody trims, can take you from 0-60mph in a staggering 3.4 seconds and tops out at over 200 mph.

As you can see, the Dodge Challenger was created to be one of the most powerful performance cars on the road and that tradition continues nearly 50 years later. With a Manufacturer’s Stated Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $28,095, the 2019 Dodge Challenger is the perfect performance vehicle for any budget.
